If you know a normal, average student bent on furthering his or her lot in life, chances are he or she will have to take one or two courses in Economics. Unless they’re budding mathematicians, they have a very negative outlook on economics, are afraid of taking the courses, and generally hate economics when they’re studying it.I’ve taught college level economics in different parts of the country for more than thirty years. The phenomenon is identical whether in California or Arkansas! The problem is that most people in the academic world do not know how to make economics understandable and relevant to the “real world.” Or, even worse, they choose not to do so. Economists, like doctors or lawyers, steep themselves in buzzwords and verbiage unintelligible to the average person. That mysticism allows them to earn many more dollars per hour than they would if they spoke and wrote in everyday English! (It’s economics!) Most students immediately think of economics as lots of math and graphs and charts. Why?Because that’s how the majority of economics textbooks are written. And since so many students absolutely hate math and graphs and charts, they hate economics before they’ve ever even cracked a textbook!I have written a book on economics geared to entering first-year college students, especially those enrolling in two-year, junior or technical college programs. I discuss and illustrate the principles without the math and graphs and charts yet make the subject as plain as day. The book, Economics Without Widgets, is written in everyday English that anyone can understand. It’s designed as a help to existing textbooks – not as a replacement.Does this approach interest you?I would like to collaborate with you and your team to create the book, an audio CD version, Internet e-book, and a series of video programs that will visually demonstrate the principles of economics on the screen in the manner in which I’ve written the book.A good idea is the starting seed for anything!By member 'Panaxus' (Stephan) |
